The Beginning
In the mid-1940s, while working on his car, a newly married Sid Levine heard about a job opportunity from a friend. He immediately jumped at the chance, marking the beginning of his career in the fire sprinkler industry. After working for several companies and realizing leadership didn't fully understand the trade, Sid took a leap of faith. As he put it: "If I'm working for someone who doesn't know what they're doing, what does that make me?"
Building the Foundation
With just a P.O. Box on Court Street in Brooklyn as his business address, Sid began doing jobs on his own. He did it all: read code books, drew plans, sold the work, installed systems, and ran the jobs. His wife, Bertha, managed bookkeeping and ensured profitability. Growth was slow and steady, fueled by reputation and relentless effort.
Growing the Business
By the early 1960s, the company was performing small union service projects under Local 638-B. In the early years, Sid completed six jobs annually. A decade in, he was doing fifteen.
Strategic Expansion
In 1972, Sid launched a separate Service Division to help the business weather recessions. Inspection calls were infrequent and cost just $5 per year. Capitol moved from South 4th Street to Evergreen Avenue, and later to Boreum Street, starting with a small shop with two trucks and one pipe rack.
The Second Generation
Sid's son, Richard Levine, joined the business. At the time, Capitol had just four employees. Though Richard considered law school, he ultimately chose to carry forward his father's legacy. Service revenue was $200,000 a year, while Installation revenue was $400,000.
New Leadership
By the early 1980s, Sid and Bertha began stepping back. Richard took on sales and leadership, growing more confident and aggressive in his approach. Capitol's workforce expanded with long-standing team members like Victor, Harvey, and Nelson Gonzalez. The company became known for converting wet systems to dry systems in warehouses during the oil crisis.
A New Home
Richard purchased a new facility at 51-51 59th Place for $500,000—a raw shell with no walls, just space and potential. At the time, Richard joked that they'd never fill the space. Today, the company occupies the entire building.
Rapid Growth
From 1996 to 2000, business took off with 12 crews focusing on office fit-outs, self-storage facilities, retail, and warehouses. In 2001, a major building code change in NYC requiring fire sprinklers in all new three-family-and-larger residential buildings kicked off a major period of growth. In 2004, Paul Marchese joined, helping Richard focus on sales and strategy.
 Expanding Services
A significant turning point came in 2012 when New York City adopted NFPA-25, dramatically expanding the scope of sprinkler system inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements—and with it, Capitol's Service Division.
A Family Legacy Continues
Capitol Fire Sprinkler is now run by Sidney's son, Richard, and Richard's children Adam and Jamie, representing three generations of the Levine family. We have grown into one of the largest and most highly regarded fire sprinkler companies in New York, while maintaining the values of quality, integrity, and service that Sid established from the beginning.
